Why Arlington?
The Arlington Homestead Association formed in 1867 to develop the borough of Arlington, which was the picturesque northern section of Kearny. This section of town had its own train station (West Arlington) and its residents were largely New York businessmen who wished to be within easy commuting distance. The area attracted large investors who bought tracts of land near the railroad.
In 1920, the residents of Arlington made it clear that the community needed a common charter and should not maintain separate identities. Arlington and the rest of Kearny would work together to share township responsibilities. The Woman's Literary Club was formed by Arlington residents and eventually changed its name to the Arlington Woman's Club.
