Why Arlington?Membership Information |
The GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington, New Jersey, Inc., is a local 501(c)(3) organization that has been involved in social and charitable work in the community since its organization in 1927. Our members are service-oriented, energetic, dynamic women who come together to make a difference in our community. Club events are organized throughout the year to raise funds for local charities and causes and to provide educational opportunities.
In addition to raising funds for scholarships and donations to support community services and activities such as the Kearny Public Library, Pathways to Independence and the St. Stephen's Food Pantry, the Juniors continue to take on a variety of projects. We are involved with community improvement projects such as the Kearny Community Garden, the Annual Town Clean Up and many others. We also host an annual spelling bee as well as a turkey drive and toy drive to assist families in need during the holiday season.
Originally, to be eligible for membership in the Juniors, an applicant was required to be the daughter of a member of the Senior Woman’s Club, and between the ages of 16 and 30. Throughout the course of our near 90-year history, the membership considerations have softened; notably, the mother-daughter relationship is no longer required and the age range changed first to 18 and 40, and as of 2014 to 18 and up.
For the past 124 years, the Woman’s Club of Arlington (WCA) has serviced the needs of the local community in Kearny, New Jersey. The original members were wives of prominent professionals in town. The club they organized in 1894, federated with the GFWC in 1895, and incorporated in 1924 was one of the founding clubs of the NJSFWC in 1894. Members of the original Woman’s Literary Club of Arlington (now WCA) organized the town’s first lending library in 1895. They volunteered to provide library services and raised funds to help found the Public Library in Kearny, running it until the Carnegie Library was completed in 1907. Over the years, the Woman’s Club assisted the library, helped to found the Kearny Museum, encouraged voting rights for women, promoted education, and volunteered at the local hospital.
As the Woman’s Club’s outreach to the community continued to grow, a second club was formed in 1927 for younger women – the Junior Woman’s Club – which later expanded to offer community involvement by girls at Kearny High School – the Sub Juniors or Juniorettes. The Arlington Juniorettes were reorganized on December 18, 2016 and are actively recruiting members for service projects.
In 1946, as women’s roles in the family started to change, some working members wanted to meet in the evenings rather than during the day; they formed the Evening Membership Department (EMD) of the Woman’s Club of Arlington. It remains as one of the few surviving evening clubs in the State of New Jersey.
The Junior Woman's Club continues to be a group of dedicated young women who are excited to enter a 91st year of service to the community with the motto of "Joy in Service - Pride in Achievement."
The club is affiliated with the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs of GFWC- a statewide organization providing education, training and interaction opportunities for volunteers who are committed to individual growth and community involvement, enriching the quality of life throughout New Jersey and the world. Founded in 1890, the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) is one of the world's oldest non-partisan, nondenominational women's volunteer service organizations.
